The Prayers

I posted about the prayers a while ago. They disbanded earlier this year(and were previously part of 'the plot to blow up the eiffel tower'). It has since come to light that their bassist, Willy Graves, died earlier this year. This post is for him.

Elliott Smith

If I was able to play guitar and in a band we would play this as a cover. I still don't know how to handle an axe and sadly i'm not in a band.

The drones are on moshcam. I just discovered moshcam and its magnificent.

Asking For It

Asking for it are a self proclaimed gutter punk band from Tassie. I listened to a few tracks from their website and they blew me away. This is the sound of young musicians bashing your ears with unbridled enthusiasm.

Rocket Science

Rocket Science are a brilliant band from Melbourne. They put on a bloody awesome live show and have released some of the most important melbourne rock records of the past decade.Welcome Aboard the 3c10, Contact High and eternal holiday are some of the favourite records in my collection. Their latest album 'Different like you' is slowly growing on me but like all of their albums is one you must listen to from start to finish to fully experience the greatness of it. This is their latest single/video clip 'with you i'll be somebody'.

Tame Impala

Everyone has a massive boner for these guys right now. I really enjoy what i've heard thus far. There amps sound like they are encased in foam and I can envisage a plume of purple smoke in the sky when these guys smash up the summer festival circuit.

This is a video someone on yourtube made for 'skeleton tiger'

these are the lyrics to desire be desire go this summers anthem.

Feel it come
I don't know how long it's gonna stay with me

Everyday
Back and forth
What's it for?
I don't know
I'll get out
won't have to

Feel it come
I don't know how long it's gonna stay with me
I'll let desire be
desire go

Dare I face the real world

Everyday
Back and forth
What's it for?
What's it for?
Back and forth
Everyday

Everyday
Back and forth
What's it for?
I don't know
I'll get out
won't have to

Check my watch

I don't have the verve to belong to this dead side
Why I ever tried
I don't know.

The Drones, Kim Salmon and the Surrealists@ The Forum

I arrived at the forum to watch the drones a little late and missed openers 'kes band' which was disappointing considering the favourable reviews i'd heard about them. With that slight hiccup out of the way I settled in to enjoy Kim Salmon(the scientists)and the surrealists playing one of the few shows they've played since they reformed with a new line-up. The Music was intense and had a trance like feel to it with the repetitive beats and droning guitars on relay. You can also see how kim influences Gaz from the drones slightly with barked lyrics thrown out in a thick aussie accent.
The Drones then entered the stage and played songs from here come the lies, havilah, wait long... and gala mill. Early on it was havilah centric until they broke out into a feedback driven version of 'six ways to sunday'. Highlights of the set for me were set closer 'shark fin blues', the crowd joining in on havilah track 'oh my's chorus and encore opener 'locust'. Yeah the drones killed it, they pretty much are the best band in australia or the bes australian band. Its so good to go to a show and listen to an australian accent and someone who just naturally moves to the enrgy of the music. No mock british or faux yank slurring just a bloke having a sing. peace in the middle east. we out!

The Grates, The Vasco Era, The John Steel Singers

Last Night I went to the peninsula lounge and witnessed 3 awesomely different bands. First was The john steel singers who remind me of sgt pepper era beatles, as a six piece they were the most interesting band of the night playing tracks from mini lp(The beagle and the dove) and upcoming e.p(in colour).
The next band on were the vasco era who i've managed to see shitloads of times through circumstance at first and then through actual want. They always put on a lively set and they once again managed to entertain the rowdy punters with a solid set of songs from 'miles' and 'oh we do like to be beside the sea'. I'm not 100% sure but it sounded like they had 2 or so new songs with backing vocals from lanky bassist Ted. I enjoyed these songs the most as well as a heartfelt acoustic cover of 'sukafish' by Sid.
The Grates were awesome, i'll be honest i didn't watch the whole set cause i couldnt be bothered enduring tall dudes shimmying in front of me but i saw a good third of the set and managed to see the end of a brawl that broke out. Patience is a born entertainer and makes daggy dancing look like break dancing.

im going to review the beagle and the dove tomorrow or some time. its fucking schweet. peace y'all

Mass Migration EP

Mass Migration are an experimental post-rock band from Brisbane. They've crafted a tiny masterpiece with this fine collection of tracks. The e.p is dark and sombre in places yet raw and frenzied in other areas. The cover art sets the mood perfectly with a hooded figure standing beneath a swarm of black birds in grey skies. 1st song 'empathy rays' starts the album of slowly with quiet synth folowed by duelling guitars that builds into a crashing sound as the mood of the EP enlivens. The 2nd song 'sepia' is one of the more mature tracks with a rollicking drumbeat and the clashing of guitars with piano. The ep then moves into top gear with my favourite track of the album 'green' the main ingredient once again the driving guitars and piano. The 4th track was also one of my favourite tracks with feedback at the start that was reminiscent of tracks off suicides first album this feed back grows into an epic speed and is followed by frenzied guitars that will blow your mind. The mood on the e.p then takes a step down with gentle, laid back track 'post'. 6th track 'there is hope' is also gentle at first but then tapers off into an exploding rhythm at the tale end of the track. Mass Migration manage to Hypnotise the listener with angelic soft rhythms that build into explosions of energy. This is quality stuff.

Spencer P Jones

Spencer P Jones has played with several different bands over a 30 year period including the johnnys, beasts of bourbon and countless others. I once saw him play at, of all places, the 'conti' in sorrento (which is what i consider a dance music driven dive, I worked there for a while ages back). He puts on an energetic, incendiary liveshow and is one of Australia's true rock showmen. The song 'wisdom teeth' is off the spooky records website. I've put it up cause im getting my wisdom teeth taken out on thursday, all four of 'em! Im shitting bricks! hahahah. This song is a collaboration with mudhoney, who are also great. Enjoy...

C.W Stoneking

I first saw C.W in his native warrnambool, when I lived there and studied at their fine university. To say that Stoneking is one in a million is a huge understatement. He makes hokum blues ditties that seem ripped straight from the 1920's and thats what I like about his music, watching and listening to him you are taken from your current surroundings and thrown into a dingy 1920's bar in deep alabama, you're sipping moonshine and thinking about nothing but these magical little ditties sung by this bedraggled songsmith.

The Cadillacs

Last night whilst feeling rather ill with some kind of virus, I decided to watch one of my favourite movies. 'Goodfellas' with liotta, de niro and pesci, its an all time crime movie classic. It also has one of the coolest soundtracks with director Martin Scorsese choosing gems from the 50's, 60's and 70's. My personal fav is 'speedo' by the cadillacs. They were a 'doo wop' band from harlem who popularised african american rock 'n roll to new white audiences. check it out.
